University of Southern Maine, Story as Medicine Course Celebration

University of Southern Maine’s, Story as Medicine Course Anthology Celebration will be held on Tuesday, April 23rd. 

Story as Medicine introduces students to the art of narrative medicine and provides opportunities to practice narrative medicine through partnering with residents of The Cedars Retirement community. Students will write their own illness narratives and work collaboratively with elder partners to collect life stories for map-making and profile essays. The course will culminate with the publication of a single anthology created by students and residents of The Cedars. Through reading, map-making, discussion, and community partnership, students will explore how stories influence wellness and the way we care for our aging population. The course is run by

Amy Amoroso, MFA, is an Honors Instructor who specializes in interdisciplinary writing. She aims to provide real audiences for student writing in various forms. She is the faculty advisor for the Honors literary journal, Island Ink. In addition to her teaching, Amy has published her own writing in The Sun, Mount Hope, Upstreet, The Maine Review, and others. Her essays “Cut Wide Open” (2014) and “Your American Dream” (2020) were selected as Notable Essays in the Best American Essay Collection.
