SUMMARY:The Savvy Palates: The Secrets of Supper
DESCRIPTION:The terrific ladies who make up “The Savvy Palates” return for another tantalizing three-part series!  \nPart One \nThe Feng Shui of Food: Clean Energy for Supper \nMother Nature table trains us by emphasizing the wisdom of being in the moment. What matters when we eat or plan a meal is GPS: where we are located right now. Food that fuels our body with clean energy is synced to season and place. Otherwise\, we get off kilter\, inviting dis-ease. That’s why cultures have specific ingredients or menus for various times of year. \nPart Two \nDinner as Your Doctor: Food Has Always Been Medicine \nFood is the original\, traditional medicine still prescribed today. Most fancy pharmaceuticals come from chemical compounds found in food. Think cranberries for UTIs\, cloves for toothaches\, ginger for nausea. Many cultures make meals medicinal when necessary. We’ll look at how food has always been used as medicine. It’s right there in that familiar Rx. \nPart Three \nFood Fights: Your Dinner is Your Identity \nOur food habits develop early and stubbornly stay part of our identity\, which we often end up defending. “I make it the way my mother did\, not the way your mother did.” Maine sued NH to protect “Maine lobster”; France prevented California from selling “champagne”; Tunisia had UNESCO protect harissa as Tunisian; Boston is Beantown. Immigrants bring their food with them. In response\, Fanny Farmer purveyed the one true American diet and now culture wars include what’s for dinner.

SUMMARY:Dementia Support Group at The Cedars ~ August 2025
DESCRIPTION:Dementia Support Group at The Cedars\n\n\n \n\n\nTuesday\, August 12 from 6-7:30 pm\n\n\n📍 The Atrium at The Cedars\n\n\n640 Ocean Ave.\, Portland\n\n\n \n\n\n Please join us on August 12 for a conversation with Susan Wehry\, MD\, about the unique nature of supporting a person living with dementia. Dr. Wehry will discuss the burdens and blessings of being a care partner\, hear from you about your experiences\, and provide resources designed to alleviate the burdens and maximize the joys. She will also distribute some caregiver self-assessment tools and ask for your feedback on which ones are most relevant and easy to use. This will help inform our Mindful Connections Dementia Respite program.\n\n\n \n\n\nSupporting and providing care for another person is a near-universal experience. Jocelyn Carter famously said\, ‘there are only four kinds of people in the world: those who have been caregivers\, those who are currently caregivers\, those who will be caregivers\, and those who will need caregivers.’ \n\n\n \n\n\n Dr. Susan Wehry is a board-certified geriatrics psychiatrist and dementia specialist with over 40 years of experience as a clinician\, educator\, and advocate. An Associate Clinical Professor at UNE’s College of Medicine\, Susan recently joined The Cedars and serves as Medical Director of the Dementia Respite Innovation program.\n\n\n \n\n\nThis group is open to individuals with a loved one who is living with dementia.\n\n\nPlease RSVP by calling The Cedars at 207-221-7100.\n\n\nFor more information about the event\, please contact Susan at susanraychardllc@gmail.com
