SUMMARY:Dean's Sweets Pop Up Shop at The Atrium
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a pop up shopping event at The Atrium with local favorite Dean’s Sweets! \nWhen they started making truffles in their home kitchen in 2004\, Dean and Kristin Bingham’s family and friends loved their sweets so much\, they recommended they start a business and so they did. Many years after opening their first shop\, their kitchen has gotten a bit bigger (it’s a commercial kitchen-with lots of fun gadgets) and they have expanded to two locations in Portland. One thing that remains the same\, is the commitment to making handcrafted sweets using only the best ingredients. Chocolate making is more than a business. It’s an art. \nPlease RSVP to Janine Fifield\, Marketing Coordinator at 207-221-7036 or jfifield@thecedarsportland.org

SUMMARY:The Honey Exchange Pop Up Shop at The Atrium
DESCRIPTION:  \nJoin us for a pop up shopping event at The Atrium with The Honey Exchange. \nThe Honey Exchange is a family business. Phil and Meghan Gaven and daughters Maura and Caitlin opened the store in the summer of 2011. \nIt all started with keeping a single hive in 2008 on a whim. Over the next several years their enthusiasm grew as they mentored new beekeepers\, did presentations at local schools\, took classes and kept reading about and studying honeybees. \nThe Gavens wanted to have a store that expressed their admiration for everything honeybees do for the planet. They are a central place where beekeepers can extract their honey conveniently\, and buy the equipment they need for their apiaries.  At the same time they recognize that managing a hive of bees isn’t for everyone. The store gives everyone an opportunity to learn about honeybees\, safely see the workings of the bees in their observation hive\, and support local beekeepers who sell their honey and beeswax products. \n  \nCome join us for some local shopping and see what all the buzz is about! \n  \nPlease RSVP to Janine Fifield\, Marketing Coordinator at 207-221-7036 or jfifield@thecedarsportland.org

SUMMARY:The Savvy Palates: The Secrets of Supper
DESCRIPTION:The terrific ladies who make up “The Savvy Palates” return for another tantalizing three-part series!  \nPart One \nThe Feng Shui of Food: Clean Energy for Supper \nMother Nature table trains us by emphasizing the wisdom of being in the moment. What matters when we eat or plan a meal is GPS: where we are located right now. Food that fuels our body with clean energy is synced to season and place. Otherwise\, we get off kilter\, inviting dis-ease. That’s why cultures have specific ingredients or menus for various times of year. \nPart Two \nDinner as Your Doctor: Food Has Always Been Medicine \nFood is the original\, traditional medicine still prescribed today. Most fancy pharmaceuticals come from chemical compounds found in food. Think cranberries for UTIs\, cloves for toothaches\, ginger for nausea. Many cultures make meals medicinal when necessary. We’ll look at how food has always been used as medicine. It’s right there in that familiar Rx. \nPart Three \nFood Fights: Your Dinner is Your Identity \nOur food habits develop early and stubbornly stay part of our identity\, which we often end up defending. “I make it the way my mother did\, not the way your mother did.” Maine sued NH to protect “Maine lobster”; France prevented California from selling “champagne”; Tunisia had UNESCO protect harissa as Tunisian; Boston is Beantown. Immigrants bring their food with them. In response\, Fanny Farmer purveyed the one true American diet and now culture wars include what’s for dinner.
