Remember When?

Before the first residents ever received rehabilitation services at the Levy Pavilion built in 1963, there were many interested onlookers. What thoughts were they pondering as they gazed out at the new construction?
They may have been eagerly anticipating a much needed expansion, the additional treatment options, or access to the best care in greater Portland. But they surely wondered about what the next generation of senior living would hold for them. Those thoughts are no doubt the same for today, nearly 45 years later. As interested onlookers peer out at new construction of The Osher Inn, they can be assured that our commitment to excellence and longstanding history of compassion is a promise we plan to keep.
Past: In 1963, construction of The Levy Pavilion captivated residents and their families. Present: Residents watch the progress of The Osher Inn.

The tradition of birthday parties and gift giving began in Europe to protect loved ones from evil spirits, thought to be strongest on birthdays. Egyptians observed birthdays, but only for their rulers, while Romans staged parades and chariot races to celebrate birthdays of their gods.
The birthday cake, like the humble birthday party, is still quite new. Cakes made in Germany from sweetened bread dough and coated with sugar were the first birthday cakes. It has been said that if the cake falls while baking, it is a sign of bad luck in the coming year. Coins, buttons, and rings were sometimes baked into cakes. The guest who received the slice with the coin was guaranteed riches in the future; the ring signified marriage. In ancient times, people prayed over the flames of an open fire. They believed that the smoke carried their thoughts up to the gods. Today, we believe that if you blow out all your candles in one breath, your wish will come true.
Past: Just like this photo taken at the Jewish Home for Aged,
we continue to hold a monthly birthday celebration for residents. Present: Our cakes are still homemade from the same recipe.
