Resident and family member Volunteers at The Cedars make such a difference in the daily lives of our seniors in skilled nursing care and in our senior rehabilitation center in Portland, Maine. Just an hour of your time reading a favorite book, talking about current events or learning how to knit becomes an eagerly anticipated and treasured part of a senior’s day. Just 15 minutes of your time assisting the elderly with transport to the dining room or activities allows staff to focus on patients with more pressing needs. Volunteer opportunities at The Cedars include:

Friendly Visitor: As a friendly visitor, we will match you up with a resident for 1:1 visits, to play a game, read a book, work on a puzzle or just spend time together.

Activity Assistant: Our Life Enrichment department offers many daily programs. Help is needed transporting residents, assuring the program runs smoothly and interacting with groups of residents throughout the event. Activities include: lectures, games, parties, art projects, cooking, concerts and parties.

Pet Therapy: Pet therapy is a great way to enhance the moods and lives of our residents. All pets must have updated health records and be screened by our staff for considered participation.

Parent/Child Visitor: A wonderful intergeneration program focusing on connecting children with elders, activities include singing songs, weekly visits, play group, stories and games.

Guest Performer:  Share your special talent with our residents! Groups are welcome and activities include singing, playing instruments, hosting lectures or programs, etc…

Spa Assistant:  Accompanying our residents to the community spa is such a delightful treat for them! Assistance with transporting wheel chairs, light hand massage and keeping residents company as needed is required for this position. Light housekeeping such as sweeping and tidying may be required.

Plant and Garden Assistant: The Cedars is community is also home to a beautiful variety of flowers, plants and a lovely green house that needs constant care. If you have a “green thumb” consider assisting us with watering and plant care!

Music and Memory: Music is a powerful healing tool and can greatly assist with memory recall. In this program you will assist the Life Enrichment program with creating play lists, loading songs on IPods and interviewing and assisting residents with musical preferences while we customize their own personal music device.
