Senior Staff

Kathryn Callnan is President and CEO of The Cedars. She began her work with the community’s elderly at The Jewish Home for Aged on Portland’s Eastern Promenade, before the home moved to Ocean Avenue in 1991 and was renamed Cedars. Kathy is a visionary leader in senior care and is a recipient of the Dr. Herbert Shore Young Executive Award in recognition of her accomplishments in the field of long-term care.

Ken Sandberg is the COO (Chief Operating Officer), responsible for day-to-day operations. Before moving to Maine, Ken was the director of health care services at Orchard Cove, a continuing care community that is part of the Hebrew Rehabilitation Center for Aged in Boston.

Joseph Rubin, M.D., is medical director of The Cedars, responsible for overseeing the administration of the medical care of everyone at the facility, ensuring that Cedars’ attending physicians are doing what regulations require. He also advises the director of nursing on medical care policies. Dr. Rubin, a psychiatrist, has recently been elected to the position of Recorder of the Assembly of the American Psychiatric Association.

Michael Bither, M.D., is medical director of The Sam L. Cohen Rehabilitation Center at The Cedars, where he provides medical leadership and support. He is a board-certified specialist in geriatric medicine and has worked at The Cedars for four years.
