Services and Amenities

One of the benefits of Independent Living at The Atrium is that days can be as full or tranquil as you choose.

  • Start the day with your newspaper and a cup of coffee in the Café, or simply cook breakfast in your own home.
  • We are located in Portland. Take part in a scheduled activity or trip, or arrange transportation to take you downtown Portland.
  • Work out in the fitness center or attend a lecture. Relax by the fireplaces in The Atrium living room and library or catch up on emails in our business center.
  • Enjoy the spacious light of our three-story Atrium while listening to the piano.
  • Take time to refresh your porch plants in our greenhouse.
  • Test your skill on our putting green.
  • Have dinner with friends in the dining room or a more casual meal in The Atrium Café.
  • Enjoy a multitude of cultural events just a short distance away in downtown Portland, or close the day at home.

Wellness is a particular focus of life at The Atrium. From our fitness center to our indoor heated swimming pool and whirlpool/spa, exercise programs are available to Members of every fitness level from beginner to expert. Workshops on nutrition, strength and fitness and more all add to a healthy and well-balanced lifestyle.

As we age, it’s doubly important to pay attention to every dimension of wellness. The Lifestyle Program at The Atrium rivals those in other Independent Living communities in Maine because of its strong focus on each individual's personalized wellness plan.

The Lifestyle Programming at The Atrium offers options for:

MIND  Education Series, book discussion group, guest historians, computer classes, bridge group.

BODY  Fitness class, personal training, chair exercise, pool, Tai Chi, golf.

SPIRIT  Cultural, entertainment and social programs, religious services, and outings to restaurants, plays, symphony.

What Members are Saying

Members take advantage of the fitness programs as proactive health maintenance, treatment of a health condition, or as an extension of a post-surgery therapeutic program. One Member saw a physical therapist about a shoulder problem. He praised her exercise regime of Tai Chi at The Atrium, and told her to keep it up. “My strength and posture benefited from my exercise program,” she said.

One of the many avid water aerobics participants didn’t take to the pool at first. After some encouragement to stay with it, a healthy habit evolved, and she’s now in the pool on a regular basis.

Fitness is Fun

Staying well is a way of life at The Atrium. “Classes are a terrific way to socialize,” says our Lifestyle Coordinator, Sharon Leddy-Smart. “Exercising with a partner or group helps you stay on track. Those individuals are more apt to be consistent, and they have fun! This is the perfect time of year to take time for oneself and start healthy habits.”

 

Sharon Leddy-Smart Lifestyle Coordinator at The Atrium, is a Certified Personal Trainer. She holds many health and nutrition-related certifications; she was a Group Fitness Instructor over 20 years. Sharon has participated in four triathlons and runs the Beach to Beacon each year.
