The centerpiece of our sun-drenched fitness center is our indoor heated swimming pool and whirlpool/spa, where you’ll find our seniors swimming laps, taking Aquasize classes or simply relaxing, all year round.


Fitness Classes and Your Own Personal Trainer
The Atrium’s Fitness Center offers exercise classes for cardiovascular endurance, muscle strengthening and flexibility for every fitness level from beginner to expert. Try yoga or Tai Chi, join your friends for an exercise walk or spend time with our own Certified Personal Trainer, Sharon Leddy-Smart. “Classes are a terrific way to socialize,” says Sharon. “Exercising with a partner or group helps you stay on track, be consistent, and have fun! Healthy living becomes a habit at an independent living community like The Atrium.”

Yoga and Tai Chi classes designed just for seniors are just one of the many holistic wellness options available to seniors in our independent living community. Wellness is more than physical — it is mental, and spiritual. “Many of the chronic ailments associated with the aging process are the result of stress, imbalance and disconnection,” explains Jessica McKneally, BA, RYT, our yoga instructor. “Relieving stress, cultivating balance in our lives and reconnecting to our self and others can go a long way towards establishing a healthier, happier, more sustainable life.”

Workshops on nutrition, strength and fitness contribute to members’ healthy and well-balanced lifestyle. Health services such as blood pressure checks, audiology, podiatry services, lab services and other convenient clinics are brought right to our independent living community at convenient, regular times.

Outdoor Recreation
The Atrium’s convenient location in Portland, Maine places so many recreational opportunities within reach. Independent living gives you more time for skiing, sailing, fishing, golf … or walks through our beautifully landscaped grounds or through southern Maine’s many trails and nature preserves. Sarah Bartell, Community Wellness Coordinator at The Cedars, offers our members at The Atrium a comprehensive selection of programs focused on fitness, nutrition and wellness. Our members are given the opportunity to participate in fitness assessments that determine their baseline strength and wellness, and re-assessments to establish gains along the way. Sarah works individually with each senior to set their personal wellness goals and monitor their progress.

Sarah's classes are held throughout the week, in the mornings or afternoons, and at varying levels of difficulty. "She encourages us to do what we can, and to keep coming back so we can see the results," one member shares, "she makes it easy!"
